  A Collector of Valuable Treasure!

Spring is in the air! The signs of spring have shown up with the explosion of the state flower, Texas Blue Bonnets, and I have commenced spring cleaning.  Well, actually, that's not true...I was forced to organize my closet, because we were in the process of replacing our bedroom carpet.

In order to prepare for carpet installation it meant removing everything that sat on the floor of our respective closets...under our beds, and the organized piles we have in various corners of the room.

Before I talk about the treasures I discovered, I would like to first interject, that when my mother passed away 10 years ago, my siblings and I were asked by my dad to go through her possessions.  My dad asked us to take what was meaningful and donate the rest to charity.

I remember coming across several beautiful hankies, and next to the hankies I found some very special pieces of paper that were carefully folded and placed in her small lingerie drawer. As I unfolded a few pieces of yellow, worn Big Chief Tablet paper, I recognized a few of these letters written in pencil had my handwriting on them.  What I discovered was that my mom kept little notes from all six of us.

Sara used my Mom's hanky around her bridal bouquet as her "something old"!
Ooohlala Floral did Sara's wedding flowers, look for her blog in my listing!

Several of the notes were apology notes to her...and one was just a "Thank you for being my mom" letter.  Reading the letters I wrote to my mother from my childhood--I felt a sudden closeness at that moment--I don't know that I could really recreate that feel again.

As I moved the tubs of "stuff" out of my closet, out from under our bed--each tub labeled with one of our kids' names on it--and while the beautiful carpeting was being installed I did it...Joe didn't want me to do it...he knew if I did it, productivity would vanish, but I did it, I opened the tubs in the middle of the living room floor.  Suddenly I felt like it was "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…"  as I came across TREASURES!
First came the clay figures each of the kids made for me!

Clearly you can see a softball mitt with a place for a ring to sit (Jenna),
another beautifully decorated ring holder (Sara), and a Stegosaurus (ah, Adam)!

Next came the daisies...One year the Art Teacher had each grade level paint daisies.  Sara was a 5th grader, Adam in 3rd and Jenna a 1st grader...each grade level added different elements to their painting.

From Left to Right the artists:  Sara, Adam, Jenna

I found an eclectic group of treasures from years gone by...poems they made up, books they wrote, homemade cards they created, art work which all are still masterpieces...

I guess I expected these mementos would be more meaningful in my Golden Years...sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair reminiscing with Joe and grandkids about the early years of the Gautille Three.  But right now, in this moment, as I continue to experience the chaos of finding my role as a mother of a daughter about to become a mom, mothering my adult children living at home--moving from disciplinarian to observer of independence, from compliance to guidance--the tub of treasures reminded me that Joe and I did our job as parents for our children.  Now we move to the role of advisors to our three.  Letting go is hard.  I don't think I am doing it very well...but I continue to work on it!

I hope when our kids discover the 15 tubs of "stuff" we have saved neatly for each of them--they feel that moment much like I felt when I read my apology note to my mom for "sassing" her over a dress I didn't want to wear to a party--that rush of love.  I know that while I have made (and continue to make) many mistakes as a parent...I hope forgiveness will also overwhelm each of them for any hurts I caused them.

Retro Can Be So Cool!

This is a RE-post of an blog entry I made this past fall.  I felt the need to repost it because it was recently pointed out to me that I left out the best part of the story...a picture of the car!  So to complete the story...I have included the 1970 Cougar!

I think most of America is experiencing beautiful fall weather!  I know we are in Dallas, Texas!  Sunday in Dallas was truly a "top-down" day!  Yesterday as Joe and I were cruising around in my husband's
Ensign Mobile-- a.k.a. 1970 Cougar convertible, which he bought new and has had it running ever since...most of the time...

Joe bought this car after becoming an officer in the Navy.  He bought it new and still has it  on the road today!
1970 Cougar

Joe reached in his box of music...pulled out Led Zeppelin-- 8 TRACK TAPE!

I'm pretty sure my husband and I were the only people in the Dallas Metroplex listening to an 8 track tape of Stairway to Heaven  yesterday--and truly loving it...ah, the simple pleasures in life!

I Lasso good music in a classic car and time with my sweet husband!

Ever Find Yourself in a Spiritual Desert?

Can you recall a spiritual desert experience in your life?
Boy, I can!
Throughout my life, as a young professional, wife, sister, daughter, friend, but especially as a mother of three, I have found I have wandered aimlessly for years in the desert.

I found myself asking, "Lord do you hear me...
Lord am I asking for the wrong thing...
Father how times do I need to pour out my heart only to have my prayer go unanswered...
Father, I don't understand."

And then in the solace of the morning or still of the night or anytime I can "Be still, and know that I (He) is God" --
~ Psalm 46:10
I believe His answer to me is, "I don't want you to know WHY, because if you did, then you couldn't really be walking by faith. I want you to believe and walk by faith"

I often forget that we have a BIG GOD! I constrain my understanding of trials, and miracles by what I know as a mortal person...not by what I know God to be. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding"
~ Proverbs 3:5

I do still wander through the spiritual wilderness, but I know that when I am wandering, I am pouring out the true desires of my heart, I trust and believe rather than constrain God to what I know is humanly possible...when our God is Omnipotent.

As we anticipate Easter, the resurrection of Christ, I want to encourage you that God does hear your prayers.   There have been many challenges that I have personally faced throughout my life, and thought God was deaf to my prayers--only to discover He was listening all along, and I have found His plan was much better than mine.

So now I Lasso my walk by Faith, not by sight!

For those who don't recognize the music to the birthday card...here are the lyrics:

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

When I was young, I fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows, day after day
Here's what my sweetheart said.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich
I tell them tenderly.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

"...My Daughter's My Daughter all the Days of My Life!"

Kathie & Sara
My daughter Sara and I had the incredible blessing of time together this weekend.

We met up with two long-time, dear friends--also a mother and daughter.

My friend Kim had the wonderful idea of getting away with our oldest daughters.
Kim & Alissa

A quaint little town north of Austin called Salado, Texas was the destination, and the Inn on the Creek was the Bed & Breakfast we stayed.

The two bedroom house was just perfect for ladies that wanted to sit, sip wine (except for Sara), eat and just talk.  No internet, no TV, just each other.

Kim has been my friend since Joe and I were newlyweds--over 25 years.  Kim and her husband, Joe lived two doors down from us when we moved to Coppell.  What I love about this friendship is that we can go months without talking, yet pick up where we left off.
Spending time with our grown daughters, one about to be a wife, one about to be a mother was a phenomenal gift we gave each other!

Giggling, sharing, drinking, eating, asking, eating and advising--did I mention eating...being...what a fabulous weekend!

While I watched Sara rub her tummy as our baby grandson squirmed, turned, and at one point must have had a kick boxing episode...I saw this beautiful young mother-to-be and beamed with such pride that she was once my baby girl!

"Then someone placed her in my arms.  She looked up at me.  The crying stopped.  Her eyes melted through me, forging a connection in me with her soft heat."
~ Shirley Maclaine

Listening to Alissa talk about the many details she has in place for a very special day in her life coming in July...her wedding was so joyful to share!

Reuniting with true friends--friendship that has stood the test of time--for all of us, coupled with the opportunity to express deep love for our daughters was what the weekend was all about!  I loved every minute of the weekend!  I look forward to the time I will have the pleasure of spending the same type of weekend with my daughter Jenna.

"A mother's love is patient and forgiving when all other are forsaking, and it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking." ~ Helen Steiner Rice

One again, Sara Lassos my heart!
